Climb Mount Kenya

Climbing Mount Kenya - the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa - is a challenging but highly rewarding experience. Take on the mountain as a charity challenge, a team-building event or a personal achievement. One things is certain, it is an experience you will never forget.

CLIMB MOUNT KENYA - which peak to choose?

Mount Kenya has three distinct peaks: Point Lenana (4985m), Nelion (5188m) and Batian (5199m). Point Lenana is the most accessible one and can be reached by any person with self-determination and reasonable fitness. The two other summits are technical climbs and require good mountaineering skills.

We offer multiple routes to Point Lenana, including the classic and the less travelled ones. If you are an experienced mountain climber, we can also lead you up to the impressive summits of Batian and Nelion.

Climb Mount Kenya - The Naro Moru Route

Once you have decided what peak to climb, the next question is what route to take? The Naro Moru, Sirimon and Chogoria routes all have their own unique features and we can also arrange treks via the wilderness routes of Burguret and Kamweti. For Point Lenana, Naro Moru is one of our most popular routes as it summits via the Austrian Hut and the worlds highest via ferrata route on the summit ridge and many will traverse the summit and descend Chogoria.

Naro Moru five day itinerary:

  1. We normally drive to Naro Moru Gate from where we trek approx. 4 hours through scenic forest to Met Station Camp.

  2. Leaving the forest, we trek into open moorland, pass the 'Vertical Bog' and reach the Teleki Valley where we stay at MacKinder's Camp.

  3. To aid our acclimatisation, we take a day-walk from MacKinder's. This trek leads us to a couple of small scenic lakes collectively known as ‘Two Tarns’. A longer trek to the Tyndall Glacier can also be arranged. We then return to MacKinder's Camp.

  4. Waking up right after midnight, we begin the ascent to Point Lenana. After a break at the Austrian Hut, we follow the ridge up to the summit and reach Point Lenana just before sunrise. Having enjoyed the spectacular views from the top, we then descend to Met Station Camp.

  5. On the last day, we trek back down through the forest to Naro Moru Gate and drive to Naro Moru Town or another destination of your choice.

Remember that you can also combine routes. For the full Mount Kenya experience, consider the Mount Kenya Traverse using the Naro Moru route on your way up and descending by the beautiful Chogoria route or our basic Mount Kenya trek package using the slightly easier Sirimon route.
