Safari in Kenya: Masai Mara National Reserve
Masai Mara is possibly the most well-known national reserve in Kenya. The reserve offers spectacular wildlife viewing with more than 95 species of mammals, amphibians and reptiles and over 400 bird species. It also plays a key role in preserving the world's greatest migration of large mammals.
Every year in July over 1.5 million wildebeest as well as huge numbers of zebras and gazelles migrate from Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara. Watching the herds as they cross rivers and great plains is a truly unique experience. If you missed it in July, you get another chance when the herds head back to Serengeti in October.
Safari in Kenya - Samburu National Reserve
Samburu is one of the lesser known reserves in Kenya. However, it is a fantastic place to spot some rare animal species. In fact, Samburu has its own 'special five', including the Grevy's zebra, the Somali ostrich, the reticulated giraffe, the gerenuk and the beisa oryx.
Activities in the reserve include game driving, bird watching, camping, nature walks, river rafting (depending on water level) and Samburu cultural experiences.
SAFARI IN KENYA - ABERDARE NATIONAL PARK
Forming the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley, the Aberdares is an impressive volcanic range with lots of scenic beauty. You will find steep gorges, dense forest and open moorland which are home to a variety of animals.
The park is also an important water catchment area and is known for its many clear streams and impressive waterfalls such as the Kakuru and Chania Falls. In addition to game drives, park activities include mountain climbing, camping, hiking, trout fishing and horse riding.
safari in kenya - TSAVO EAST & WEST NATIONAL PARKs
The Tsavo East and West National Parks are located next to each other in the Southern part of Kenya. They were divided in 1948 for administrative purposes, but share many of the same animal species and characteristics, one of them being the red soil. Because of the coloured dirt, many of the elephants here will appear red.
Apart from excellent game drive opportunities, there are also other other interesting activities. In Tsavo East you can visit the Aruba Dam which was built in 1952 or go for a walking safari along the Galana River. Visiting Tsavo West, you can enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Jibe or go rock climbing at Chaimu and Ngulia Hills.
sarari in kenya - Amboseli national park
Amboseli National Park lies on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, just north-west of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for its big game drive and with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, there are excellent photo opportunities here.
With five main wildlife habitats making up Amboseli - open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland - there is a range of wildlife to be seen. Visit the Observation Hill for an overview of the park and complete your safari with a Maasai cultural experience.
Safari in Tanzania - Serengeti national park
Covering more than 14.000 square km, Serengeti lives up to its Maasai name Siringet, meaning endless plains. Home to around 70 large mammals and 400 bird species, the park is famous for its high diversity of wildlife. It is also here you can experience the spectacular Great Migration from the Tanzanian side in July and October.
For the ultimate safari experience in Serengeti, consider adding a walking or balloon safari to your game drive itinerary.
Safari in Tanzania - Ngorongoro Crater
Covering an area of 150 square kilometers, the Ngorongoro crater is famous for its density of wildlife and stunning landscape. With a bit of luck, you can spot the Big Five in just one day! Game drives are excellent all year long, but you might want to visit during low-season as the crater floor does get busy with safari vehicles.
